For all of you sensitive skin girls out there, I truly know how you feel. If you’ve read any of my reviews on skincare products and found them helpful, I’m certainly grateful (despite red, itching, burning discomfort). I’m writing this post because I have received a few comments via many platforms about beauty product woes. So, here are some things to look for on your next drug store run.
I’m going to go out on the limb and say that all body lotions will very proudly announce their active ingredients. Why shouldn’t they; it’s part of how they market the product. Active ingredients are what make the product work. This may be a gimme, but if any of the big and bold ingredients are your skincare allergies (allergies period, frankly) I’d suggest you keep going. Don’t forget to flip that bottle around and take a really good look at the ingredients list.
Fragrances can be natural or artificial. Companies can get really creative about how they list their fragrances on their packaging. If you are someone with particularly sensitive skin, it may be a good idea to steer clear of fragrances all together. Artificial fragrances can have harsh chemicals and natural fragrances can be just as harsh.
Essential Oils / Extracts
All-natural products are a fan of these oils. Essential oils are oils naturally found in plants such as citrus fruits and some herbs (rosemary, lavender, geranium, etc.). Oils like these are commonly used for fragrance, but are also used for specific skincare properties. The thing about essential oils is that they naturally have citric acid in them and can be irritating to the skin. Same goes for extracts; be mindful of where they come from. If they’re from citrus or herbs, it can be harsh to your sensitive skin. Look for extracts like green tea, eucalyptus or aloe. These have anti inflammatory properties and are generally very soothing to the skin.
